What is the Golden Round Trip?

A loop from Lucerne: boat to Alpnachstad, the cog railway to the summit, the Dragon Ride cableway and the panorama gondola down to Kriens, and bus 1 back to Lucerne. It takes about 4.5 hours of travel, plus your time at the top.

At Alpnachstad an underground passage leads from the pier to the cog railway station. The railway rises 1,635 m over 4.6 km at gradients of up to 48%, the steepest cogwheel railway in the world, and takes about 27 minutes up. At the top you have time on your own for the summit paths and the terraces. The Dragon Ride cableway takes about 3.5 minutes down to Fräkmüntegg, the gondola about 30 minutes to Kriens, and bus 1 takes you back into town. Most people make a full day of it.

Which direction should you do the Golden Round Trip?

Boat first, then the cog railway up: that is what reviewers recommend. You arrive fresh on the lake in the morning and ride down the cableway with the views ahead of you.

The reverse direction, bus and gondola first from Kriens, is also allowed and works if the morning forecast is best at the top. But the boat is the relaxed part of the day, and it is timed better in the morning. Note that a cog railway seat reservation is not part of the self-guided ticket: in busy summer weeks, reserving your ride up avoids a wait at Alpnachstad.

When does the Golden Round Trip run in 2026?

From 11 May to 18 October 2026. It needs both the boat and the Kriens lifts, and the boat stops after 18 October while the gondola and Dragon Ride cableway close for maintenance from 19 October to 27 November.

The cog railway runs longer, from 11 May to 29 November 2026, so from 19 October to 27 November the only lift to the summit is the cog railway from Alpnachstad, up and down the same way. What is the difference between the Golden and Silver Round Trip?

The Silver Round Trip swaps the boat for the train, about 20 minutes along the lake between Lucerne and Alpnachstad. Everything else is the same loop.

Choose the Silver Round Trip when the boats have stopped, when the weather on the lake is poor, or when you want a shorter day. It is not a winter product: it needs the cog railway, which does not run in winter, and the Kriens lifts, which pause for maintenance in late autumn.

What is the cheapest way to get up Mount Pilatus?

On foot: walking up and down needs no mountain ticket. Next comes walking up and riding down on a one-way ticket, then a return ticket on one line, with the round trips as the full experience.

Walking up takes 5 to 6 hours from the valley on T3 mountain trails, or under 3 hours from Fräkmüntegg, so it suits fit hikers only; see hiking up Mount Pilatus. How do you get the most out of the day?

Start early, check the live page and webcams before you set off, pack a warm layer, and leave at least two hours at the top for the summit paths.

• Go early: the first boats and trains are quieter, and clouds often build in the afternoon.
• Check the weather at the top, not in Lucerne: on foggy autumn days the summit is often sunny above a sea of fog.
• Bring a warm layer: the summit is about 10 degrees cooler than Lucerne.
• Walk something at the top: the Esel takes 15 minutes, the Flower Trail to the Tomlishorn about 1.5 hours there and back.
• Stay for sunset if you are sleeping at one of the two summit hotels.
